Hawthorn Stewart 1891-1965

Hawthorn Stewart was the third son of JBS and moved to Cowdenbeath sometime before 1920.  I assume he lived with his sister Elizabeth Brown who was already living in Cowdenbeath at that time.  I only knew him in later life when he was living at Stenhouse Place, Stenhouse in Edinburgh.  Elizabeth and Hawthorn had four daughters, Betty, May, Ruth and Dorothy.  As Ruth was not married she lived at Stenhouse Place all her life only moving to a care home at 94 and becoming a victim of Covid in 2020.

A few years ago Connie Bentz sent a few photos over for identification.  They had belonged to her grandfather Henry Stewart but no one knew who the people were.  The wedding photo  was one of the items.  I believe it was taken in 1919 and was taken at the marriage of Hawthorn to Elizabeth Hunnam.  The name of the photographer at the bottom right says Cowdenbeath which is in Fife.  I await further info from the Edinburgh Stewarts.

This photo was taken on the occasion of sister Peggy McNaught’s visit home circa 1960.  Back row:  Peggy(Margaret) McNaught, Agnes Glendinning, Christina Morrison.

A visit with my father to Hawthorn and Elizabeth Stewart’s house at 52 Stenhouse Place, Edinburgh.

I am very grateful to Shirley Ellerton for sending me this photo of her Grandfather Hawthorn.

The photo is not dated and I had no idea that Hawthorn took part in WW1.

I can only think that it must have been a worrying time for JBS and Elizabeth having 3 of their 4 sons in uniform.  The other two being James Buchanan Stewart junior and John Stewart.  Henry Stewart having emigrated to Pennsylvania.
